Buffalo Beach is named after HMS Buffalo, a Royal Navy storeship that was wrecked here in July 1840 while loading kauri spars in Mercury Bay. A memorial and anchor on the foreshore at Buffalo Beach Reserve commemorate the ship and her crew, most of whom survived the storm. During the 1960 Chilean tsunami, unusually low tides briefly exposed parts of the wreck again, renewing local interest in Whitianga’s maritime history.
